– “Unions are essential to allow people to survive, not only in times of peace but also in war times”, George Sandul.

Representatives of two national trade union centers and the legal director of Labor Initiatives, George Sandul, gave an interview for HesaMag (26th issue, 2022), an online magazine of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) devoted to occupational health and safety.

George told about the adaption of LI activities to war realities in Ukraine, humanitarian efforts, and Trade Union Lifeline – the joint project with unions and local activists to provide emergencies to those in need. Also, he made comments on the legislative initiatives and labor reform in Ukraine, its ups and downs.

 – George Sandul also authored an article about labor laws in Ukraine for the International Politics and Society (IPS) online magazine, which highlights global inequality and brings new perspectives on issues such as the environment, European integration, international relations, social democracy, and development policy.

In the article, George gave an overview of the laws undermining worker’s rights as well as analyzed the positive legislative initiatives, such as the anti-harassment law adopted in December 2022.

In addition, George pointed out that “ensuring a decent life for every employed person in Ukraine needs a common front of governmental institutions that must be aware of their social function, employers focused on retaining labor during and after the war, and trade unions that must drive not only the protection of existing but also the achievement of new rights for wage earners”.
