Platform Economy and Informal Employment: Risks for Workers in Ukraine
Together with prominent Ukrainian journalist Tetiana Goncharova, Labour Initiatives recorded new video episodes dedicated to pressing labour law and labour market issues in Ukraine.
In the first episode, LI Legal Director George Sandul discusses the growing risks associated with the platform economy. He explains how workers in platform-based employment often face unstable working conditions, lack of paid leave, absence of occupational safety and health protections, and unpredictable wage changes.
George emphasizes that despite the flexibility often promoted by digital platforms, workers frequently remain without sufficient legal and social guarantees.
The second episode focuses on informal employment, which continues to affect a significant part of Ukraine’s labour market. According to estimates mentioned in the episode, more than 30% of workers in Ukraine are employed informally.
George Sandul explains why signing an official employment contract is critically important for protecting labour rights and preventing exploitation. He also outlines what workers can do if they are employed unofficially or receive part of their salary “under the table,” including how to contact the Labour Inspectorate and seek legal protection.
