Strengthening Union Communication and Representation

On 10 July, LI supported intensive training on persuasive communication and organizing skills for 29 activists of the Marine Transport Workers’ Trade Union of Ukraine (MTWTU).

The MTWTU, which unites both seafarers, cadets and workers employed in ports and other maritime and inland waterway transport infrastructure, is one of the few Ukrainian trade unions that has continued to grow despite the challenges of the full-scale invasion. As the union expands, strengthening the communication and organizing capacities of its activists has become increasingly important for attracting new members and building stronger workplace representation.

The training was delivered by Tetiana Goncharova, a well-known Ukrainian TV journalist and public speaking and rhetoric trainer. Through practical exercises and real-life scenarios, participants learned how to communicate the value of trade union membership in a convincing and accessible way.

The training focused on common organizing challenges, including how to respond to workers who hesitate to join the union because they believe that membership fees are too high, how to effectively present the benefits and services provided by the union, and which persuasive techniques can help build trust and encourage workers to become active union members. Participants also discussed practical communication strategies for different audiences and workplace situations.

Another important component of the training was public communication and media engagement. Activists improved their skills in delivering clear and compelling messages during interviews, communicating with journalists, and managing union social media platforms. Strengthening the union’s public visibility and promoting a positive image of trade unions in society are essential elements of successful organizing, particularly during wartime.
