Trade Union Lifeline for Strong and Resilient Trade Unions: Odesa

On June 5, 2026, LI and the Trade Union Lifeline (TUL) initiative held another cross-sectoral, cross-union educational event, this time in the city of Odesa, as a continuation of a series of events in war-affected regions of Ukraine aimed at reaching and supporting as many union members as possible.

Around 50 members of different unions in the Odesa region took part, including the Trade Union of Railway and Transport Construction Workers, the State Employees Union, the Agroindustrial Union, the Trade Union of Chemical and Petrochemical Industries of Ukraine, the Trade Union of Housing and Communal Services Workers, and the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers.

Trade Union Lifeline continues to develop and enhance its efforts to educate local union members in frontline cities on best union practices, including international experience in grassroots development, organizing approaches, mutual support in the workplace, and overall resilience-building capacity.

Thus, TUL activists Kateryna Izmailova and Kateryna Voloshko facilitated an opening session aimed at allowing members of different unions to build connections before the main training sessions and ease their way into working in cross-sectoral groups.

Leonid Stoikov gave opening remarks on behalf of the LI and TUL team. TUL founding members and union activists Ivanna Khrapko, Pavlo Babich, Olga Chabaniuk, and Vladyslav Riznyk held a session on union membership motivation with active participation from the attendees, aimed at strengthening the resilience capacity of union organizations in the region as well as building cross-sectoral grassroots connections.

Additionally, upon request from local union members, a dedicated training session on first aid was held, which is especially crucial in a frontline city constantly bombarded. The necessity of such intervention was dictated by the increasing desire of union members to be able to provide the necessary first aid in case of injury at a workplace caused by an enemy attack.
