Right to Strike in the Public Service Sector

On November 21, Labor Initiatives' was invited to speak at the webinar organized by the Public Servants Union of Ukraine in cooperation with the ST Swedish union on the right to strike for public service sector workers. Experts from the UK trade unions GMB and PCS also shared their experience on the issue.

Bullying at Work: Legal Workshop

On November 20, Labor Initiatives lawyers Alina Antonenko, Kateryna Shvets, and Nadiia Yolkina were invited to conduct a legal workshop about preventing and combating bullying (mobbing) at the workplace for over 40 elected union leaders and lawyers working in local chapters of the Trade Union of Workers of Metallurgical and Mining Industries of Ukraine.

Human Rights Ombudsman Agenda: People with Disabilities and Environmental Rights

On November 15, George Sandul, Labor Initiatives' legal director, co-chaired the Social and Economic Expert Council quarterly meeting, which functions under the Human Rights Ombudsman of Ukraine. The Council members discussed two important issues - (1) timely social benefits to people with disabilities due to occupational injuries and workplace accidents, and (2) access to justice in environmental cases—both issues with significant wartime complications that need to be navigated and solved.

On October 30, the European Commission released its 2024 enlargement reports, which offer a detailed assessment of the state of play and the progress made by the countries seeking to join the European Union. The reports also provide guidance on key reform priorities for each country.

Adapting to New Realities – War Trauma and Loss Experience

In October, the Labor Initiatives hub in Kyiv continued the series of joint events facilitated by representatives of the charity organization Vesta. Vesta has been functioning since 2015 to help veterans and their family members with various issues, particularly legal and psychological aid, support for injured veterans, and advocacy of veteran-friendly policies and laws.

On October 24, Labor Initiatives lawyers Alina Antonenko, Kateryna Shvets, and Nadiia Yolkina conducted a webinar about preventing and combating bullying (mobbing) at the workplace for more than 90 representatives of the National Trade Union of Cultural Workers of Ukraine.

Improving Negotiation Skills

On October 7 and 21, Solidarity Center and Labor Initiatives supported two online seminars for union leaders of the Nova Poshta Union (Nova Poshta company is the biggest private postal and logistics operator in Ukraine) about peculiarities of day-to-day communication with management and negotiation on better worker conditions.

International Lawyers Assisting Workers Conference

On October 9-11, Labor Initiatives lawyers Inna Kudinska and Nadiia Yolkina joined SC Ukraine Country Program Director Tristan Masat at the 3rd International Lawyers Assisting Workers Network (ILAW) Conference in Casablanca, Morocco. The ILAW Network was established in 2018 and now encompasses more than 1,300 members in over 90 countries.

Another Landmark Decision on Whistleblower Protection

On October 9, 2024, after a year of court proceedings, the Supreme Court of Ukraine ruled the final decision in the second reinstatement case of prominent union leader and whistleblower Olena Bebeshko from the Independent Trade Union of Aviation Workers, a long-standing partner to Solidarity Center and Labor Initiatives.
